Highland NY NuRider Wins Weekly $100 Stop & Shop Gift Card

Rideshares to work to compete in Earth Day Commuter Challenge

WHITE PLAINS, NY—Feb. 11, 2009 – Jennifer Coleman, an employee at ENAP, Inc.—a lumber and building materials cooperative in New Windsor— is the weekly winner of a $100 Stop & Shop gift card in  the 2009 Earth Day ‘Race to the Finish’ Commuter Challenge.

“I’m thrilled,” said Jennifer, who has been carpooling from her home in Highland, N.Y. to work in New Windsor, N.Y. with two co-workers since last May.

“Who can’t use a $100 gift card,” she stated. “I have two small children, so it’s definitely a big help.”

The Earth Day race, sponsored by MetroPool, Inc. under the umbrella of the New York State Department of Transportation, is a fun, free, on-line Challenge designed to encourage employers and commuters to reduce drive alone commuting, cut congestion and improve air quality.

Hundreds of area employers will compete against each other between now and Earth Day during the Challenge to see which companies can encourage their employees to reduce the most car trips and help them save the greatest amount of money.

Participating commuters can also win $100 in groceries provided by Peapod, the nation's leading internet grocer.

Launched in January, the event encourages individuals to take greener forms of commuting by carpooling, vanpooling, taking public transportation, telecommuting, walking and biking between now and Earth Day (April 22nd).

By signing up for NuRide (www.nuride.com) and logging their completed miles, participants can save money on gas and earn rewards from local and national sponsors, including over two dozen weekly prizes of $100 in groceries delivered right to their door by Peapod; or from Stop & Shop in areas where delivery is limited.

Winning employers in Connecticut and New York's lower Hudson Valley will also receive awards and recognition at the conclusion of the event.

Last year, when the Challenge was held for the first time, commuters shared 130,000 rides, resulting in a reduction of 2,100 tons of auto emission and 200,000 fewer gallons of gas used.

Participating employers are invited to compete against each other in races that tally the most number of reduced ridesharing trips, highest participation rate, most total enrollments, and greatest number of new enrollments.
