MetroPool Expands Number of Park & Ride Lots
for Commuters in Hudson Valley Counties

WHITE PLAINS, NY—June 19, 2009 – Two new park & ride lots have opened in Poughkeepsie to serve commuters who use city’s LOOP Commuter Train Connection bus service to the MTA Metro-North Railroad station.  The lots, which opened in June, are located at the Page Industrial Park on Route 55 (Manchester Bridge) and 12 North Hamilton Street (the Crannell Street lot).

The new locations bring to seven the total number of lots that MetroPool, Inc. has negotiated with private property owners in Dutchess, Putnam and Ulster counties in the past year. Each lot is strategically located to serve carpoolers and bus shuttles to the train station.

The new 35-space Page Industrial Park lot is a joint venture with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT), MTA Metro-North Railroad, Dutchess County, and MetroPool, Inc.  The 30-space Crannell Street lot is a joint venture with the same entities, as well as the City of Poughkeepsie.

The seven new park & ride lots are provided under contract with private property owners along highly-traveled corridors in the lower- and mid-Hudson Valley region.  The lots do not require fees or permits; and enable commuters, who use carpools, vanpools, buses or trains for trips to and from work, to leave their cars, avoid traffic congestion and save on commuting costs.

“This is a great solution for parking capacity issues in the area,” said John Lyons, president and CEO of MetroPool, Inc., a commuter solutions company that provides free commuter services under contract to NYS DOT.

“It allows the state the ability to provide additional spaces without the expense of building new parking lots; it serves owners by reimbursing them for parking spaces that otherwise would be unused, and it expands capacity for commuters,” he said.

Other parking lots have been added for commuters at the following locations:

Dutchess

  • East Fishkill – 51 spaces at Kimberly Korners Shopping Plaza, 1606 Route 82 (at the Taconic State Parkway Interchange)
  • Hopewell Junction – 40 spaces at Le Chambord Inn, 2737 Route 52.

This lot provides overflow capacity for the nearby NYSDOT lot located at the Taconic State Parkway/Route 52 interchange.

Putnam

  • Brewster – 40 spaces at Temple Beth Elohim, 31 Mount Ebo Road.

This lot serves the new shuttle bus service between New Fairfield, CT and the MTA Metro-North Train Station at Southeast, NY operated by the Housatonic Area Regional Transit (HART).

Ulster

  • New Paltz - MetroPool negotiated a 40-space lot at New Paltz Agway, that closed June 15th

when it was replaced by a permanent, new and larger lot with 65 spaces at the New Paltz Auto Dealership, one half mile to the south that is a joint venture with the Village of New Paltz, NYSDOT and a private property owner. The lot serves the UCAT Ulster-Poughkeepsie LINK that provides bus service to the Metro-North railroad station at Poughkeepsie.

  • Kingston – 35 spaces at Family Restaurant, 131 Route 28.

This lot provides overflow capacity for the nearby NYSDOT lot located at Exit 19 of the New York State Thruway.
