Tips for Riding the Bus Plan your trip before you travel. You can call the bus operator and/or visit their web site to find out route, schedule and fare information.
Here are some things you should know before you go:
Your starting address - where you can board the bus. Some stops are marked with an official "bus stop" sign and others are not. The customer service representative will be able to provide you with this information. Try to be at the bus stop at least five minutes ahead of the scheduled departure time.
The fare and how to pay - you will need exact change or pre-paid fare (such as a token or pass). Drivers carry no change.
Riding the bus - board the bus through the front door and pay the fare. If riding more than one bus, ask for a transfer when you pay. There may be a charge for a transfer. You can find this out when you call customer service or visit the operator’s web site.
Getting off - ask the bus driver which stop is closest to your destination. About one block from your bus stop, signal to the driver to stop and let you off (pull the cord above the window or press the strip along the window, depending on the type of bus boarded). Get off the bus by the rear door.
"My commute is one hour each way and that really gets to be a grind when you’re doing it alone day in and day out. It’s also very expensive when you’re putting more than 100 miles on your car every day. I really like meeting new people and interacting with them and I have formed a very nice friendship with my carpool partner. We signed up for a yoga class after work together, which is great since we’re ready to leave at the same time. For me, carpooling is a huge relief from the stress of driving alone."
