"Commute
'n Save" Program Delivers Bottom Line Value to Employers &
Employees
Alternate
transportation is not only attractive from a lifestyle point of
view; it can also benefit the bottom line. A company can save money
(in payroll taxes) when it allows employees to pay for up to $100
per month of their transit or vanpool fare (plus up to $185 per
month qualified commuter parking) with pre-tax income. And employees
can saveup to $425 per year on transit and vanpool fares alone,
plus the savings they enjoy from a lower cost, lower stress commute.
The SMART Commute Group promotes this "Commute 'n Save"
tax-free commute benefit throughout the county and works with employers
to implement the program.
"Commute 'n Save is almost always part of the package," says MetroPool's Lyons. "It's an easy benefit to set up, and it provides great value to both commuters and employers."
Under the Commute 'n Save program, transit can include BeeLine bus or other commuter bus services (public or private), MTA Metro-North railroad, vanpools and ferry service. This is a valuable "perk" for employees who help to ease traffic congestion when they choose this option.
Businesses that are already participating in commuter mobility programs consistently report positive results and appreciative employees. Their services and programs work.
